Lighting up towers, talaias and talaiots in the Mediterranean for human rights
La Encesa began in Mallorca in 2016, promoted by a group of teachers from IES Marratxí who wanted to re-establish the visual connection between the ancient defence towers. That first year, unbeknownst to them, coincided with the 400th anniversary of the death of Joan Baptista Binimelis, mathematician and creator of the historic smoke and fire signalling system.
With the support of the Balearic Mathematical Society SBM-XEIX, the initiative was born with the aim of historical recreation. However, with the passage of time and in view of the migratory reality of the Mediterranean, Encesa has also become a gesture of reflection and humanitarian commitment: imagining that the light rising from each watchtower indicates the way to a safe harbour for all those seeking protection.
