Folklore from Andratx

Music, dance and ancient costumes are part of the tradition and customs of Andratx.

Mallorcan folk dance is governed by matriarchy. The woman leads the man, interpreting and improvising as she pleases, in a game of erotic insinuation and sensuality. He, for his part, has to imitate her without losing the rhythm or the marked movements.

The folkloric group Aires d’Andratx, advocates a spirit of dance, where festive expression, fun, improvisation and women play a very important role.

Aires d’Andratx has recovered, maintains and spreads the style of dancing the most typical dance of our municipality of Andratx: the boleros. It has also adopted other dance forms from the different regions of the island, including in its repertoire, jotas and fandangos. These dances originated in the 18th century Bolero School and became popular at the beginning of the 19th century on the island of Mallorca.

This folkloric group has recovered the popular clothing of the 19th century, in order to dress as authentically as possible, and at the same time, to work for the dignification of traditional dress.

The group, in its performances, has adopted the way of dressing of the Mallorcan popular class of the 19th century, both in the costumes for work and for parties, wearing, in most cases, authentic pieces that are more than 120 years old.
